Sea Moss Details

What is Sea Moss?

Sea Moss, scientifically known as Chondrus crispus, is a unique species of red algae found on Atlantic coastlines. Boasting an array of vibrant colors from yellow-green to dark purple and resembling uncut lettuce leaves, this fascinating seaweed thrives in tidepools and along coastlines throughout Britain, Europe and North America.

Boasting a long tradition of use stretching back to ancient times, sea moss is renowned for its purported nutrition and medicinal benefits. In fact, evidence indicates that Chinese medicine began utilizing the nourishing powers of this marine plant as far back as 600 B.C., then it spread across Britain’s Isles by 400 B.C. Perhaps most notably in modern history however, was how it provided sustenance during Ireland’s Great Famine in the mid 19th century. The famine even led many Irish immigrants to establish seaweed farms upon their later arrival to America.

Health Benefits

Not only does sea moss provide essential nutrients; it also contains prebiotic mucilage fiber which may help promote overall gut health. Early research also indicates that sea moss could potentially bolster the immune system and provide protection against salmonella. Additionally, one study has demonstrated its ability to inhibit S. Enteritidis, a bacteria which causes salmonella in humans. However, more extensive studies are necessary to understand if this effect can be reproduced in clinical settings with animals or human participants.

Portion Sizes

Sea moss is a powerhouse ingredient that packs vital nutrients into your diet. Moderation is key. Just two tablespoons of sea moss are enough to provide you with the iodine necessary for good health. However, it’s important to only have one serving per day as an excessive intake of iodine could lead to goiter and other issues.
